Vitamins in Your Tea
We have questions from readers asking about tea and whether it’s healthy or not.
The answer is not simple, but overall we’ll say yes, tea is healthy, especially green tea.
While the verdict is still out on caffeine – some swear it’s good for us and others are just as certain it’s bad – there are other things which are absolutely certain. For instance, if you are drinking a lot of white or black tea and loading it up with heavy milk and white sugar, the net effect including the caffeine would be quite unhealthy, but a cup or two of green tea a day is, according to most experts, very healthy. Green tea is made from the same plant as black tea, but the leaves are sweated rather than cooked or burnt, and thus are left with their vitamins and nutrients intact. Green tea is high in antioxidants, moreso than black tea, and is said to have anti-aging and disease fighting properties.
There is also a wide variety of herbal teas on the market, which have gained popularity in recent years. Not only can you find green teas with extras such as lemongrass and other yummy additions, but also many mistures which are high in vitamins and antioxidants. Some healthy ingredients commonly used include rosehips, chamomile, lemongrass, hibiscus, cardamom, cloves, spearmint, chicory, lemon verbena, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon, ginger, and more. These creative teas are a great alternative to coffee and pop; they contain lots of vitamins and nutrients, taste great and are healthy as opposed to being unhealthy. They also keep you hydrated without all the sugar, fat and chemicals associated with other popular drinks.
