Vitamins For New Mothers and Pregnant Women
As you visit with your obstetrician or midwife, one subject you are likely to discuss is which vitamins are necessary for the healthy development of your baby. You’ll also need more vitamins and minerals than you normally would tp help grow that baby and keep your own energy levels up while you go about your usual daily routine.
Many pregnant women are advised to take a prenatal vitamin supplement, which usually is quite similar to a regular vitamin supplement with the exception that is contains a higher concentration of certain nutrients, such as folic acid and iron. These nutrients help you retain your energy while contributing to the building of a healthy child in your womb.
Be sure to ask your doctor, doula or midwife about what is most appropriate for you in terms of prenatal and post-natal vitamin supplementation.
Such decisions must take into account your specific lifestyle and diet. For instance, be sure you address such questions as: How much of your daily vitamin needs are met by an existing healthy diet of organic vegetables and fruits, whole grains, etc.? How much protein are you getting? Are you accustomed to taking a multivitamin, and just need to top up with extra specific nutrients? Do you eat a lot of fast food, sugars, caffeine or other foods which can compromise your health and that of your developing fetus? Do you get plenty of exercise?
