Vitamins For a Young Female

Q: I am in good health, but need to know what vitamins should I take to be better myself. I know it must have a multi-vitamin daily, but there is something that should have? My goalĀ is to be as healthy as possible so as not to lose weight or something. I appreciate your answers.
A: Every growing girl – and boy! – needs essential nutrients. Kudos on caring about your health.
Your best bet is to eat lots of good, whole foods like whole grains (not white bread!), vegetables and fruit. Certified organic foods are always best, and the fresher and less processed the foods you eat the more nutrients they will contain.
You can also take a vitamin and mineral supplement to ensure your growing body gets the nutrients it needs and to help provide you with energy. Ask your doctor or your pharmacist for recommendations. Also note that young women who are menstruating may need extra iron; if you eat lots of leafy greens you should be fine, but also check with your doctor on this issue.
Special note about supplements for teenagers: Many young people, especially boys, become interested in weightlifting, bodybuilding and other performance sports. There are many performance enhancing supplements and formulas available, and not all are safe for young people. Some, of course, are not even safe for adults, however the bodies’ of growing teenagers are even more susceptible to damage from toxins. As with any vitamin or supplement regimen, speak to your doctor (and not just your sports coach or mentor) about what is appropriate and healthy for you.
