Taking Too Many Vitamins Can be Harmful
Q: Can taking too many vitamins be harmful, or even toxic?
A: Yes. While many vitamins in the average vitamin supplement are water soluble, meaning they will wash through your system and not build up, many others are not as easily absorbed, nor expelled. Some vitamins, while essential and healthy in the correct dosages, can be harmful to our bodies if there is too much present. SomeĀ of the B complex of vitamins, Vitamin c and Vitamin D, for instance, cause uncomfortable and potentially harmful side effects if taken in excess, but are essential for health.
The side effects of vitamin toxicity depend upon which vitamin you have too much of, but can include symptoms ranging from mild – weakness, nausea, loss of appetite – to severe – memory or immune impairment, vomiting, sleep impairment, poisoning.
Always take vitamin supplements with your diet and lifestyle in mind, and consult with a health practitioner regularly. Vitamin supplements are best used to fill in gaps in your diet and to enhance your life to ensure optimum health, and should not be used to replace food or in attempts to combat diseases or as remedies to other health problems, unless you have the specific input and approval of someone who is an expert in such matters. This needs to be said because many people, especially on the internet, claim to be health experts these days and are leading people to purchase and take many millions of dollars worth of diet and health ‘supplements’ of questionable efficacy and benefit. Be careful and always know what you are taking and why!
