Q: Can I get enough vitamins from my food?
A: Although in the ideal world most people would obtain the perfect balance of vitamins and nutrients from their diet alone, this is not always practical or possible in the real world of busy days and even busier evenings.
Vitamins and minerals are essential to human health, and help us with everything from food and energy processing to immunity, tissue and bone health and growth to disease prevention.
You can get your best shot at obtaining the vitamin and mineral requirements with the following tips and guidelines:
- Eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible, preferably organic. Although drinking juices is also helpful, the fresh produce contains valuable fiber which helps delay sugar rushes and cleans your digestive system. Fresh fruits and veggies should be the mainstay of your diet, and proteins such as meat and carbs such as grains should play second fiddle. Even if you get plenty of fresh produce daily, with today’s growing and shipping processes you cannot always be sure you are getting the ideal amount of nutrients from your food.
- Regulate the fluid balance in your body by consuming plenty of clean, filtered or distilled water. Water is absolutely essential for obtaining and maintaining peak performance, and is available in fruits and veggies as well – another reason to eat lots of them!
- Tailor your diet to your age, gender and levels of fitness, stress and general health, as well as any known conditions or deficiencies you either have or are susceptible to. Your doctor or a good nutritionist can help you with a diet and vitamin supplement plan, as appropriate.
- Watch and be aware of your intake of certain vitamins and minerals in fortified foods, such as dairy products, meal replacements, cereals, commercial fruit and veggie smoothies, and more. Many products contain added items in an attempt to help people get their daily requirements, and you could inadvertently consume too much of some vitamins, causing unexpected and possibly unpleasant side effects.
- Consume a variety of foods. The traditional bodybuilding diet, as an example, and many other fad diets purported to help with health or just help you lose weight, are often woefully deficient in a variety of vitamins and minerals. If chronic, this situation can lead to serious health problems. Variety is always your best bet, especially when it comes to fruits and vegetables, which contain varying amounts of essential nutrients, as well as other beneficial components.
Whatever your diet, you may find it beneficial to ensure you get your daily needs filled by consuming a vitamin supplement complex, or by taking id=ndividual supplements as necessary.
