More people are concerned about their health every day, and that’s a good thing. We are happy to see that people are taking more active interest in their diets, their potential for controlling or mitigating disease, and their overall health.
Part of this burgeoning interest in healthy lifestyles includes an interest in natural and organic products, and organic vitamins are no exception. Organic vitamins have been appearing on shelves in droves, and not jsut in health food stores.
Should you supplement your already healthy diet with vitamins, and if so should you invest in organic vitmains and supplements? According to natural health experts, “The erosion of organic soil and the highly processed food diets of modern North American have resulted in epidemic levels of vitamin deficiencies for many people.” This explains the drive for vitamins and supplements that has created the vitamin industry boom, but are organic vitamins really of significantly better quality?
The short answer is, it depends. If you can source truly natural vitamins based on organically grown or extracted substances, they are likely to be of higher quality than drugstore brands, and will result in greater absorbency. However, because the word ‘organic’ is itself a fad lately, there can be imposters on the shelves just using the word for marketing purposes. What constitutes organic? The trick is to know what you’re buying; as with any purchase, being an educated consumer is the only way to be sure you are getting value for your hard-earned money.
Look for products that are certified to be organic by an entity other than the USDA, and which contain extracts of plants rather than chemical names you don’t recognize. Look for explanations of processes that make sense and aren’t full of hype and sales pitches. Unfortunately, you’ll often find the prices for organic vitamins and supplements are a little higher, but the more we as consumers use our buying power the better prices will be, as mainstream providers offer alternatives for the marketplace.
When in doubt, visit and speak with your local organic vitamins experts, such as health food stores and your pharmacist, then make the best decision you can based on what you’ve learned.
